CubbyPad works on your Mac. There's no account, no analytics and no ads, and we don't collect anything about you or how you use it.

What stays on your Mac

CubbyPad keeps these in ~/Library/Application Support/CubbyPad, and nowhere else unless you turn on sync:

  • Your layouts: pages, folders, the names you give apps and folders, hidden apps and grid size.
  • A history of when each app came to the front, for the suggestions above the grid: the last 60 days, at most 4,000 uses. It never leaves your Mac; deleting the folder above clears it.
  • The layout from before your last Organize, so Undo can put it back.

Your choices in Settings are kept in CubbyPad's preferences file, like any Mac app's.

What CubbyPad reads, and only uses on your Mac

  • The apps in your Applications folders, and their names, icons and App Store categories.
  • Which apps are open and the badges they show in the Dock.
  • The recent files of an app you search for, from the list behind File › Open Recent.
  • The names of your Shortcuts, so search can run them.
  • Your old Launchpad's pages and folders, if macOS left them behind. CubbyPad only reads them.
  • For Cleanup: when apps were last opened, their sizes, and the files they keep in your Library.
  • Finger positions on the trackpad while the pinch is on, and the pointer's position while a hot corner is on. Neither is stored.

Apple Intelligence

When Apple Intelligence is on, searching in plain words (“edit photos”) and Organize give your search and your app names to Apple's on-device model, which runs on your Mac. CubbyPad doesn't send them anywhere. You can turn plain-words search off in Settings › Search & Siri.

Voice search

The microphone is on only while CubbyPad is listening, after you click the mic or press ⌘D, and CubbyPad doesn't save what it hears. Speech is turned into text by macOS. On Macs that can recognize speech on the Mac itself, CubbyPad asks for that; on Macs that can't, macOS may send the audio to Apple to recognize it, under Apple's privacy policy.

Sync through iCloud Drive

If you turn on Sync with your other Macs, your layouts and app names are saved to a CubbyPad folder in your own iCloud Drive, where Apple keeps them under your Apple Account. We can't see them. Turn sync off and delete that folder to remove them.

Update checks

Once a day, unless you turn it off in Settings › General, CubbyPad asks GitHub whether there's a newer version, and downloads it from GitHub if there is. Like any web request, this shows GitHub your IP address and CubbyPad's version; GitHub's privacy statement covers what it keeps. CubbyPad doesn't send anything else about your Mac.

Permissions macOS may ask for

  • Microphone and Speech Recognition, for voice search.
  • Controlling Finder, to open an app's Get Info window.

CubbyPad changes other parts of your Mac only when you ask it to: Add to Dock adds an app to the Dock, the F4 key option remaps that key until you turn it off or quit, and Move to Trash moves apps to the Trash.
