# Check the microphone used for voice search

Verify the Mac’s available audio input if voice search starts but cannot hear the app name you say.

Last updated 26 October 2026

## Follow these steps

1. Connect or select the microphone you intend to use in macOS audio-input settings.

1. Check CubbyPad’s microphone and speech permissions.

1. Open the grid and start voice search with Command–D.

1. Speak an app name clearly, then pause.

## What to expect

The active voice action can receive input through the Mac’s speech-recognition path. Connecting a headset does not by itself prove the expected input or permissions are ready.

Voice search changes the input method. You can still type the same name if a microphone is unavailable, muted or unsuitable for the environment.

## If the result is different

If recognition remains empty, test the microphone in a normal recording or system-input check and note whether it detects sound. If words are recognized but the wrong app opens, refine the query instead of treating that as a microphone hardware problem.
