# Deactivate a Mac before moving your license

Choose Deactivate in Settings › License on the old Mac to free an activation for another compatible Mac.

Last updated 26 October 2026

## Follow these steps

1. Keep the key from your purchase receipt.

1. On the Mac you are leaving, open Settings › License.

1. Choose Deactivate and inspect the resulting status.

1. Enter the same key on the new Mac and activate it online.

## What to expect

The old Mac no longer occupies that activation. Deactivation does not itself transfer the app arrangement or install software on the destination.

Use a layout backup or optional iCloud sync for the organization you want to bring along. A Duo key can keep a second Mac active when a seat is still free.

## If the result is different

If the old Mac was sold, wiped or is unavailable, contact support from the address used for the purchase and include the order number. Do not buy again merely to recover an unavailable activation without checking support options.
