# Layout sync and layout backups solve different problems

Sync shares the current arrangement between Macs. A backup preserves a deliberate recovery point you can identify and restore later.

## Use sync for current organization

CubbyPad’s optional iCloud Drive sync brings layouts, folders, hidden apps and chosen app names between participating Macs. It is useful when you want today’s arrangement to follow you rather than manually exporting after every small edit.

## Use a backup before a significant decision

A backup is a file saved at a time you choose. Keep one before Organize, an import or a choice between different synced arrangements. Give it a recognizable date so that it remains meaningful when you want an older state.

Sync is not a promise that every previous organization remains available as a separate recovery version. A deliberately kept file makes that recovery intention explicit.

## Neither includes every application and document

Both concern launcher organization. Software still needs to be installed on each Mac, important documents need their own backup, and license activation remains separate. A matching app icon is not evidence that the associated project data was transferred.

## Combine them with a small habit

1. Enable sync only on the intended Macs and account.

1. Save a backup before broad changes.

1. Check the second Mac after cloud delivery.

1. Retain a known-good recovery file until the new arrangement is confirmed.

Deactivate the old Mac, then use the same key on the new one. Your license and your saved layouts are separate.

[### Choose the right layout when iCloud and a Mac differ

Inspect the two arrangements before selecting this Mac’s or another device’s layouts. A quick backup makes that choice easier to reverse.

Choose a display rule when connection describes the activity, and a Focus Filter when your intent is a better signal than the hardware setup.
