# Review unused apps before your Mac runs short of storage

Use size and last-use information to make deliberate decisions while there is still time to inspect important files and occasional tools.

## Make a review list before a removal list

In Cleanup, choose a three-month, six-month or one-year unused interval and inspect the results. Sort by size when the question is disk space, but read what each tool does before selecting it. A large specialist app can be rarely used and still necessary.

## Match the action to the goal

Hide from Grid makes browsing quieter without freeing the installation’s disk space. Move to Trash concerns the application itself. Proposed leftovers are separate support files whose paths should be reviewed individually.

An app layout backup preserves organization, not every project or support file belonging to the software you remove. Keep important data through its own appropriate backup process.

## Inspect installer copies as another category

A DMG left in Downloads may be unnecessary once the installed Applications copy works. It may also be an offline or older-version copy you deliberately keep. Verify its purpose instead of assuming every package is redundant merely because it shares an app name.

## Leave removal reviewable

1. Choose only the items you understand.

1. Read the confirmation and exact leftover paths.

1. Move the selected items to the Trash.

1. Check the result and the Trash before deciding on permanent deletion.

[### Downloaded installers are different from installed apps

A disk image in Downloads and an app in Applications can be separate copies serving different purposes. Verify which one you are using before cleanup.

Installed app count describes your library. Current memory pressure depends on running work, so inspect active applications before choosing a cleanup action.
