# When manual layout switching is the clearer choice

A direct layout selection can be more predictable than a rule when your activities do not consistently match a time, monitor or Focus.

## Some activities have no reliable automatic signal

You may write, edit pictures and handle work on the same monitor within one hour. In that situation, neither the time nor the display says enough about your intent. A deliberate selection from the layout menu can be clearer than an automatic guess.

## Make the manual choice quick to recognize

Use distinct names and a small number of arrangements. The top-left chooser, menu bar entry and Settings provide routes to switch. Choose the entrance already near your hands instead of turning every context change into a new automation project.

An added layout starts from the current arrangement, so keep the difference purposeful. Near-identical layouts can make a chooser harder to use without adding useful context.

## Add a rule after observing a pattern

If a recurring monitor connection or Focus later becomes a reliable marker, add that one rule and test its exit behavior. Automation works best when it removes a step whose intent was already clear, rather than inventing new rules for an unpredictable day.

## Resolve unwanted switches

1. Inspect the active layout name.

1. Check Focus Filters and existing automatic rules.

1. Disable a redundant condition rather than duplicating another one.

1. Keep a backup before reorganizing multiple layouts at once.

Activation gives a Mac access to CubbyPad. A backup or iCloud sync brings over the arrangement. A smooth move handles both.
