# Why Escape sometimes closes a folder instead of the grid

CubbyPad uses Escape to back out of the current interaction before closing the whole launcher.

## A launcher can have several active layers

Listening for speech, editing a name, browsing an open folder, searching, selecting apps and arranging icons are different states. An Escape press can back out of the current state without discarding the entire grid view behind it.

## Read what changed after the key press

If listening stops, you have left voice input. If a folder closes, you have returned to its page. If a search clears or a selection changes, the key handled that nearer interaction. Check the visible state rather than assuming a press that did not close the window was ignored.

This lets you recover from an accidental edit or entry without immediately losing the browsing context you were using.

## Closing the grid is different from quitting

After backing out of the active layers, Escape can close the grid. CubbyPad can remain running so its shortcut and other opening controls are ready. Use its Quit command only when you intend to stop the launcher itself.

## Describe an unexpected sequence precisely

1. Note whether search, a folder or editing was active.

1. Press Escape once and observe the result.

1. Compare another input route if needed.

1. Report the starting state and the result rather than only saying that Escape did nothing.
