# Downloaded installers are different from installed apps

A disk image in Downloads and an app in Applications can be separate copies serving different purposes. Verify which one you are using before cleanup.

## Understand the installation container

A drag-to-Applications DMG is a container used to copy an app onto the Mac. The installed Applications copy is the one intended for normal use. Ejecting the mounted image after a successful copy is different from removing the installed app.

## Open the installed copy before discarding the image

1. Quit a copy running from the disk image.

1. Launch the app directly from Applications.

1. Confirm the expected version and normal access.

1. Only then decide whether the downloaded installer should be retained.

## Some installers are deliberate archives

An older-version package or offline installer can have a reason to stay. Keep it labeled and backed up appropriately instead of letting a familiar file extension determine its value. Conversely, several accidental repeat downloads may simply be duplicates you no longer need.

CubbyPad’s installer review helps inspect candidates; it is not a substitute for deciding whether a specific source should remain available.

## Use the right removal action

Deleting an installer does not uninstall the working copy. Moving the actual app to the Trash is a different operation. Check the selected file’s path and role, especially when the same app icon appears both inside a mounted image and in Applications.

[### A large app library does not explain memory pressure by itself

Installed app count describes your library. Current memory pressure depends on running work, so inspect active applications before choosing a cleanup action.
